Virago

performance art and the body - bach photography / melbourne lockdown

The zine ‘Virago’ is a visual exploration of my own identity as a woman. The project explores aspects of our visual culture as well as components of my own life that represent a strong female energy to me. I have also explored stereotypes associated with femininity whilst simultaneously challenging and engaging in them, trying to understand what it means to be a feminine presenting person in the present culture of our world. Originally used to explain powerful, heroic women, the meaning of the word 'Virago' quickly was used against these same women in a negative fashion. Instead of being mighty and powerful, it was used instead to describe a woman who violated cultural norms. I think these women were so cool and through this project I hope to reclaim this word and show that being a woman is indeed powerful and exciting and something to cherish.

All makeup looks for this assignment were done by myself in my house during lockdown. And all photos included are self portraits.

Song accompanying my work: Mango (Freestyle / Process) by Orion Sun & Mulch from the album A Collection of Fleeting Moments and Daydreams.

All photos taken for this zine on a Canon 90D (minus the cover and back cover which were taken with a Polaroid. This film was also filmed using a canon 90D.
